Root beer business is taking a stand! Barrels of Fun, the exciting new Dr Pepper Museum temporary exhibition, illustrates root beer’s recipes for success throughout the years. Beginning October 5th, stop by the Museum and uncover the fan-favorite drink that shaped America’s landscape, winning admirers worldwide!
Designed for visitors of all ages, this exhibition, occupying space on the Dr Pepper Museum’s second floor , examines in-depth the humble roots of the popular soft drink. From root beer’s invention by Philadelphia pharmacist Dr. Charles Hires to his aggressive marketing strategy of the signature brew-at-home beverage, learn about the root beer that started it all. See the rise of the big brands – including staples A&W, Barq’s, IBC, Thomas Kemper, Triple XXX, Hires, Stewart’s and MUG. Come find your favorite!
Barrels of Fun features multiple thematic areas addressing root beer and the role of the soft drink in the free enterprise system. The exhibition additionally showcases root beer’s rise as “The Temperance Drink” during prohibition, explores the byways of America with root beer drive-ins, examines its status as micro-brewed cult classic, and introduces root beer’s relatives, cream soda, birch beer, and ginger beer.
Multiple hands-on activities are scattered throughout the gallery space. Visitors will be challenged to identify the ingredients in root beer’s classic brew and can compete to complete an advertising scavenger hunt throughout the exhibition. Younger visitors can operate a retro root beer drive-in in our unique root beer stand recreation.
The free enterprise system is illustrated through root beer’s development through the years. All exhibition components work to demonstrate not only the story of the frothy drink, but address aspects of launching root beer into the market place from conception to expansion and diversification. The Dr Pepper Museum is located at 300 S. 5th Street in downtown Waco.
